Design of the interior and cover
Once your thesis is written, it’s time for design. This includes the interior layout and the book cover.
- Interior: images, margins, line spacing, fonts, and layout should be readable and professional. You can do this yourself in Word, Latex, or InDesign. Alternatively, you can outsource it to a graphic designer.
- Cover design: the cover is the exterior of your thesis. Itβs the first thing people see and where you can make a good first impression. Ensure the images are relevant to the thesis topic with a direct connection to the content. Also, use high-quality images and colors. A professional appearance is crucial for establishing credibility and trust with the reader. If you are short on time, you can hire a graphic designer. Typically, it takes about three weeks to finalize a design.
Which paper and which format for printing your thesis?
The most common format for a thesis is 17 by 24 centimeters. PhD candidates have a choice of four types of paper for the interior:
- G-print: this paper is whiter, smoother and has more gloss than the other three types of paper. The advantage of this type of paper is that it makes the images and tables stand out sharper. The majority of PhD students choose this.
- Woodfree offset: this is the standard printing paper that you find in printers. It is wood-free, which means that it yellows less quickly under the influence of air.
- Biotop: made of wood, this paper has a more yellow tint. It is suitable for theses that are read intensively. Bright white paper can strain the eyes because it reflects more light, while the yellow Biotop paper is more comfortable to read.
- Recycled; this type of paper is made entirely from recycled paper. When using recycled paper there may be some variation between different batches, meaning consistency is not always 100% guaranteed. If you choose recycled paper, you are making a sustainable choice.

This is how you make your thesis more beautiful: embellishment options for your thesis
We can apply various special effects to the cover. The cover can be enhanced with Spot UV varnish, embossing, laser cutting, an extra flap and foil printing.
- Spot UV varnish: with Spot UV varnish you can make images and texts shiny and eye-catching.
- Embossing: embossing, also called embossing, is a technique in which certain parts are raised or deepened.
- Laser cutting: with laser cutting you can cut letters or shapes into the cover. This ensures that you can see through certain parts of your cover. For example, think of a heart that is on the second page and that you can see because a piece has been cut out of the cover in the shape of a heart.
- Foil stamping: foil stamping allows you to add a glossy and metallic finish to certain parts of the cover. This can be done in, for example, gold, silver or another color. It gives the cover a luxurious and elegant look and immediately attracts the reader’s attention.
- Extra flap: an extra flap can serve as a built-in bookmark. Additional information, such as the subject or a slogan, can be added to the flap.
