Getting your PhD during corona is different than you imagined. There are many new rules to which we must adhere. This can also cause some adjustments in your thesis. We understand that you might have some questions about this.
1. What changes if my promotion will be online instead of physically?
Normally you mention the location of the promotion on the invitation. Since your promotion will be online now, you don’t have a location to add. That’s why you can leave it out. You can choose to add a link or QR code that gives access to the online promotion.
2. What happens to the printed dissertations that have already been sent?
It is possible that you have already printed theses that contain a location and/or date and time of the promotion. You might even have already submitted these booklets. You do not have to reprint the theses with the correct information. You can add a sticker with the right information. However, you have to make sure that the information in your digital version is correct.
3. Do I still have to print booklets since my promotion will be online?
In almost all cases, you still need to send printed theses. Check this with your supervisor(s) to be sure!
4. Is it sufficient to send a digital thesis to the members and chair of my doctorate committee?
You should discuss this with your supervisor. According to the doctoral regulations, it is a requirement that the members and the chairman of the doctoral committee receive a printed copy. If everyone agrees, a digital version could also be possible.
5. Can my paranymphs attend the promotion if I promote online?
It is certainly possible to invite your paranymphs to your promotion. They may be present on location when they keep a sufficient distance (1.5 meters) and their presence complies with the latest rules of the RIVM. It is also possible for the paranymphs to pass on their e-mailadress to the beadle in order to gain access to the online promotion via Zoom or another streaming service.
6. Do I also have to have a ‘layman’s talk’ during an online promotion?
It is possible to show a PowerPoint presentation via Zoom or other streaming service. This makes it possible to have a layman’s talk. Make sure you test this in advance.
7. Can my friends and family follow my promotion online?
Many universities opt for a live stream, for example via YouTube. In that case, it is certainly possible for friends, family members and other interested parties to follow your promotion online. Ask your own unversity about the possibilities regarding your situation.
8. Will my online promotion be recorded?
It is possible to make a recording of your promotion. If you want, you can receive it and share it with family and friends or anybody who is interested.
