How many copies of my PhD thesis do I need?
It’s a wrap! Many, often lonely, hours behind your computer. It has cost you blood, sweat and perhaps some tears, but the writing is finished, the content has been approved by the reading committee: your PhD thesis can be printed! The moment that you have been looking forward to for at least 4 years.
A wonderful feeling and now on to the penultimate stage of the promotion process. You will have to make a number of important choices regarding the execution of your PhD thesis. Which type of paper for your interior, matt or glossy laminate for your cover, which binding method, etc. But also: how many theses do I have to order? How many do you actually need?
In this blog we answer these questions. For this we consider the following topics:
- Determine the number of copies
- Price difference
Determine the number of copies
Our tip: make a list. Defending your PhD thesis is literally a party. Think of it this way and make a list of names of guests that you would like to invite to your party. Guests to whom you would like to give your PhD thesis. Friends, family, colleagues, etc. Making such a list, will give you a better overview of the number of copies you should order.
On average PhD students order between 100 and 200 copies. The price difference between 100 and 200 copies is relatively small. Ordering a small number of copies afterwards is financially a lot less attractive. Suppose you first ordered 100 copies and later order another 50 copies extra, it becomes (unnecessarily) expensive. The second order of 50 copies will cost about the same as the first 100 copies. Therefore a total order of 150 copies is a lot more attractive.
Printing costs are largely deductible
The costs for printing your theses are largely deductible. You may only deduct the costs from the number of theses that have been made compulsory by the university. On average, this often concerns 10 to 20 copies. You can also ask the printing company to include the start-up costs in the invoice for those 10 or 20 copies. This way you can deduct most of the costs from the tax.

As we mentioned above, it is good to make a list. If you then order about 20% more than is on the list, your choice is always “safe”.
All the best and if you have any questions about the number of copies you should order or general questions regarding the printing of your thesis, please let us know.
